Employment Services

How to use them and get the job you want:

By JG Côté

Employment Services - Pay for Services:

There are a number of companies out there that will offer you services ranging from writing resumes to actually matching you up with a job.  Some of these services do have value although I think paying for services such as resume writing is a waste of money.  As I mention in the next heading below, there are plenty of places you can find free help for services such as that.

Some companies that offer to find you employment for a fee actually do a good job.  However they can be very pricy and they do not always guarantee to find you a job.  As well, some companies do guarantee they will find you employment but they will not guarantee which job you will actually get.  You may end up being offered a terrible position that you don’t accept, while the employment service company walks away with your money.  Be careful if you this route not to get taken for a ride.

There are other employment service agencies that offer companies looking for employees a service.  They will charge the company a fee to find someone to fill a particular position.  These firms are usually referred to as ‘head hunters’, and look for highly qualified, highly specific professionals.  This is not likely a good source to find employment unless you are lucky enough to found by one of these agencies.  In other words, they find you, you don’t find them.

If you are going to go this route, make sure you do your homework and ask the company a lot of questions.  Always read the small print and make sure you don’t get yourself into something you can’t get out of.  The last thing you want to do is end up spending big money to end up in a job you hate or not get a job at all.  Personally, I am not a big fan of these types of services because I feel that you are leaving your future in someone else’s hands.  Besides, there are plenty of free ways you can market yourself and get the job you want.

Employment Services - Free Services:

A lot of countries/states/provinces have government agencies that offer resume writing and job searching help absolutely free.  These places are a great resource!  Sometimes they even offer training programs for people wanting to upgrade their qualifications. As well there are always job postings and usually job databases that are constantly being updated.  If you have the opportunity to post a resume at a place like this, I highly recommend it.  They often try to match up employers with potential employees on a regular basis.  There are also a number of free websites on the Internet that will give you resume & cover letter templates.
