Environmental Scientist


Conduct research or perform investigation for the purpose of identifying, abating, or eliminating sources of pollutants or hazards that affect either the environment or the health of the population. Utilizing knowledge of various scientific disciplines may collect, synthesize, study, report, and take action based on data derived from measurements or observations of air, food, soil, water, and other sources.

Responsibilities:

Environmental Scientists can perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Collects, identifies and analyzes data to assess sources of pollution, determine their effects, and establish standards.
  • Prepares graphs or charts from data samples and advises enforcement personnel on proper standards and regulations.
  • Determines data collection methods to be employed in research projects and surveys.
  • Plans and develops research models using knowledge of mathematical and statistical concepts.

Employment Requirments:

  • Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Use scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
  • Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions.
  • Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • A bachelor's degree is the minimum formal education required for these occupations. However, many also require graduate school.
  • Environmental Scientists may need some on-the-job training, but most of these occupations assume that the person will already have the required skills, knowledge, work-related experience, and/or training.
