Job Searching – The Basics:
By JG Côté
What is the most basic key to getting the job you want? Apply, try and try again!
The first thing you need to do when beginning a job search, is realize that looking for a job is a job itself. If you really want or need a new job you need to take the process serious. That being said, the whole process does not have to be as difficult and stressful as you may think. Job searching can even be enjoyable and rewarding especially for professionals if you know the right process to follow.
The #1 Rule of job searching is, apply for every job you even slightly consider as acceptable. Remember, you don’t have a job until you actually have it, and you don’t need to accept it if you do get it. My father always told me “you can’t get a job if you don’t apply for it and you don’t have to take it if you don’t like it”. This was good advice!
Many people turn away from good quality jobs because they feel they are under qualified, don’t suit the job, or just won’t like the work. This is non-sense! Any job has the opportunity of becoming great potential and you can’t realize this potential until you actually apply for it.
If you’re lucky enough to get an interview (only 1-10% of people who apply do get interviews, depending on what field of work), you will gain valuable insight into the company or agency you are applying to. You can tell a lot about an employer by how their interviews are conducted. As well, in most interviews, the interviewers allow the candidate an opportunity to ask questions. This can help you decide whether or not you want the job, in the event it is offered to you.
In addition, you get great interview experience whether you are offered the job or not. This is very important because previous experience is an extremely crucial factor when performing in any interview. For example, could you read or ride a bike the first time you tried. Probably not, and that means that the first time you are in an interview you may not do as well as if you had previous experience.
So remember, apply for as many positions as possible and always go to the interview if you can, experience and practice can only help. Don't get discouraged or quit trying, the more you work at it, the more sucessfull you will become.
