Job Searching with Newspapers and Classifieds

The Forgotten Resource:

By JG Côté

There are endless places to find job listings, job advertisements or employment services.  The key is to focus your searches to the areas where you can find the specific jobs you are looking for.  Don’t pick-up an edition of Commerce Weekly if you want to get a job as a Firefighter.  Find the sources of information that are general in nature (covering many job types) or sources that are specific to your line of professionalism.  Some of the more specific job posting are often found in association magazines sent out to members of specific job professions.

Everyone knows that newspapers and classifieds have job postings everyday, however they can be very inconsistent in their job classification types and often do not offer a broad range of professional areas.  This is not to say however, that newspapers and classifieds are a bad place to start, it just means that you should not limit your search to these sources.  Just a note, local newspapers and classifieds are a great place to look for jobs if you want to live in a specific area.  Often the businesses and governments of small towns, cities or municipal/county governments advertise most of the jobs in their local papers.  They may not offer a large selection but if location is important to you, these are great sources.
