What is Human Resource Planning ..?

For a small to medium sized business or operation, it can be very costly if you do not have the right people on the job when you need them. Your business is particularly vulnerable if it is affected by absenteeism, turnover, low motivation, a high injury rate or difficulty in recruiting trained workers for new technology, all issues that can be dealt with through effective human resource planning and management.

No business or employer can succeed without a solid plan of managing its finances and capital resources. Human resource planning brings the same kind of discipline to managing the human capital of an organization. People and employee planning is equally vital to the smallest firm, the largest corporation, non-profit organizations and entire sectors of industry.

Human resource planning will help you do several things:

Identify the kinds of skills your employees must have if your organization is to succeed.

Develop a strategy for making sure your current or future employees have those skills.

Deal with such critical human resource issues as effective recruitment, employee morale, turnover, etc.

The specific elements of a human resource planning strategy, like a financial strategy, will be linked to your business plan and will depend on the specific needs of your business. It might include, in-house training for existing workers, a new compensation aned promotions policy to motivate and reward your best employees, training for supervisors in people skills, methods to recruit more qualified workers, or using under utilized sources of labour such as persons with disabilities and members of visible miniority groups.

But in every case, a good human resource plan can help you to:

Save Money - by managing human resources more effectively, you gain greater control over the costs involved in hiring, training and managing staff.

Increase Productivity - by matching human resources to your organization's needs, you ensure the best person is available for the job at hand.

Adapt More Quickly - by planning ahead, you ensure that your organization can respond to changing conditions, such as new technologies or new markets.

Build A Winning Team - by matching people to the right job, training them so that they have confidence in their abilities and rewarding performance, you will build a work force that is motivated, loyal and committed to the success of your business.
