Working Abroad
Know what to consider before making the jump:
Searching for an out-of-country job can be an exciting and rewarding thing however, it can also be difficult if you have never done it before. Leaving your country to work elsewhere for the first time might be tough, but if you know what to expect or look for, it can be a great experience.
Local Company Working Abroad:
Finding a company from your native country (for example, if you live in the United States than you guessed it the United States) that operates abroad can make your life a lot easier. Everything you will need to do prior to leaving your country of origin can be done right at home. For example you can attend interviews, meet with the company representatives and do any other tasks required by the company while you are still at home. This makes things way simpler and prevents you from having to invest time and money into traveling for things like interviews abroad.
Employment Services:
You might also want to consider looking for a job through a local employment services company. Some specialize in working abroad and can be very valuable in giving you information regarding appropriate documentation, visas and other necessary procedures.
Government:
Government departments can also have jobs or positions available abroad. Talk to your local government offices or take a look at their websites. Work for the Government abroad can often be very good. They usually often a huge amount of support to their working staff and will almost always be willing to assist you in matters pertaining to you working abroad. Remember that in most countries governments have a wide range of departments that encompass a large range of jobs and employment careers. Therefore it is important to search all the different government departments for available jobs.
Volunteering:
Most people want to take career and work positions that involve getting paid (we all need money to eat right?) there are often a number of opportunities available abroad that may meet your needs. Often volunteer organizations will pay your travel and living expenses in order to accommodate you while working. Although you will not be receiving a salary while working, you can live for “free” and gain extremely valuable experience abroad while doing it. This is often a great stepping stone for those who want to work abroad but have never done it before.
As with regular out of country employment, consider finding a volunteer agency from your home country that operates abroad. Consider working for the government or using the services of a recruiter. Both these offer support and information that can be vital to your success overseas. Volunteer assignments are a great way to test your capacity for working overseas in a different environment and may not carry all the obligations that a paying job might.
Language:
Try to stick with your first spoken language or with others that you are fairly fluent with. If you only speak English, try to work in a country that is English speaking. It is hard enough start a new job in the first place, never mind a new country with a new language. Keep things as familiar and simple as you possibly can. This way you are more aware of what you are getting yourself into.
